Long Live Writing: New Tools for Transparency in Student Writing in the AI Era
January 16, 2025
EXPO HALL LEADERSHIP ROUND TABLES: BOOTH 3386
Classroom Leaders
Writing in the classroom has been thrown into turmoil in the AI era. Some have questioned the efficacy of continuing to use writing for assessment in the classroom, while others continue to believe that writing is an essential and foundational human skill. As a member of the latter group, we’ve worked hard to highlight a simple solution and new data source that can bring greater transparency to student writing while addressing several long-standing issues in the assessment of writing. Writing (verb, the process and activity) is now more valuable than writing (noun, e.g. the finished product). By focusing on the student writing process, we can highlight aspects of writing practice that are pedagogically known to improve writing skills development–brainstorming, outlining, writing, and editing–and encourage those actions through an intelligent tutoring system. With this new data and analytics tools we also can unlock new insights about student writing and create a clear, transparent view of student work and contribution to their own writing while maintaining a human in the loop. This session will explore the potential of this new dataset–capturable from Google Docs and a Browser Extension–in interventions, feedback, and new AI-assisted assignment types, regardless of the classroom AI policy.
