Many studies have shown a strong correlation between spatial ability and performance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subject matters. Over the last few years, curriculum providers have begun offering STEM content via immersive virtual reality (VR) as a way of bridging that gap in more powerful ways. But VR doesn’t meet students and teachers where they are: together in a physical classroom. When discourse, meaning making, collaboration, and physical interaction are essential in developing important critical thinking skills, using immersive VR can create more barriers than it purports to break down, because most VR learning experiences, by necessity, happen in isolated, non-participatory ways. ReframeXR is an experiential learning platform that offers new and unprecedented ways for teachers to use mixed reality to bring what is essential to learning in VR into the classroom. With the application of passthrough technology, we can distill and preserve what is great about VR - impossible or expensive interactions - without sacrificing collaboration, safety, or engagement. Most importantly, ReframeXR offers teachers the ability to incorporate familiar, proven teaching and learning behaviors (group collaboration, technical vocabulary usage, active discourse, turn taking, etc.).
